I know one studied biology/environmental science, he's now in Australia working on a PhD. He did his study abroad doing research at the Great Barrier Reef. I think the other one is also doing something environmental.

I have family that went to Western Washington (as other have mentioned, not a SLAC) - they loved it and are doing very well in professional life.

I believe Walla Walla has a winery tour festival each year.

Although your son is focused on US LACs in the Northwest, would he consider the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ? Not small, but has a gorgeous location in one of North America's most beautiful cities. The law school has a social justice orientation and the undergraduate school may be strong in environmental sciences (not certain, however, as I haven't researched this university in years). Located on Vancouver Island, Vancouver B.C. is accessible by ferry with or without your vehicle.

Canadian universities are the opposite of a US LAC, but your son is interested in the region and may be interested in the majors offered. Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington is actually Northeast of Victoria, B.C.

Regardless of whether or not your son would consider a Canadian university, be sure to visit Victoria and Vancouver Island in British Columbia as it is even more beautiful than the state of Washington--in my opinion.

Willamette University is located in beautiful & quiet Salem, Oregon. I have been to Salem & to the campus, but it was so long ago that I hesitate to comment. Big on Japanese studies.

The Pacific Northwest is different than the rest of the US. Lots of rain & lots of overcast skies.

Both salem, Oregon and Walla Walla, Washington are home to state prisons which could be a valuable resource for some majors.

Lewis & Clark is located in an attractive area of Portland, Oregon.

University of Puget Sound offers a lot of Asian studies / international business & economics / 9 month trip through several Asian countries every other year. First President of the school was a former President of Northwestern University.

Reed College is in its own world. Visit to see if it is a fit. Rumors about lots of drug usage.

Western Washington University is not an LAC, but is a great school for environmental subject areas. Beautiful location.

Whitman College is well respected. Walla Walla is arid and has wineries. I have never been to Walla Walla, but it should be within driving distance of the Columbia River--which is spectacular. Whitman College has a very active Greek social system.

Two of my siblings' kids are Puget Sound graduates and are doing well now. One is in medical school and the other has a good job and is happy. They loved it there.
