Just out of curiosity, were you one of the parents that wrote their child’s admissions essay for them?

Try the military, it will teach your undisciplined child some respect and they might still be able to get enough training for a job after.

It depends on why. Do they need to mature a bit? Was there a mental health issue? Do they need more structure around them to keep them on task? Do they need to take fewer classes? Have academics always been difficult, so a trade may be the answer?

Going to the local community college can be a next step, but some analysis needs to be done first.

My DD attends a Midwestern LAC and her first-year roommate had attended the year before but had been put on academic probation (not yet dismissed) for two semesters but she appealed and came back after missing only the spring semester. She had to prove that she could handle a full course load by working and had to get therapy letters that she was stable enough to return. But she wasn't fully dismissed and so this is not as relevant to the OP's question. I think her plan was to work a bit and then either try to go to community college or maybe transfer to her state school, though I don't think she would've actually had a shot transferring to the Midwestern flagships where her parents work.

Be more specific, what are the grades? Did they fail classes or did they get below 3.0 and get dismissed from a program or scholarship that required higher grades?

If you want to continue working toward a college degree, then check out local community colleges / junior colleges or less selective public universities. Some well known universities have very high acceptance rates. Arizona State, Kansas State, Univ. of Kansas, etc.

If not interested in continuing with college at this time, then work for a year or two before returning to school.

Any interest in joining the military ?

Life goes on. You should be fine. Lots of jobs available & lots of colleges and universities will accept you, but won't give you credit for courses in which you received a low grade.
