A friend's parent put their ok size, shape home on the market for $2.5 million there. So even at 900K income it might be a stretch to own a home.

The west coast homeless situation is out of control--especially bad in San Francisco and in Portland, Oregon.
Housing costs are ridiculously high.
Ask for a salary of $500,000 and a signing bonus of $250,000. Then say "No thanks."

In SF proper? I’d look at housing and the cost of catholic school. I lived there many years ago in my single days, and I don’t think I’d want to go back with a family. It is just not a very kid friendly city.

+ 1 Highly doubt that they are offering you an equivalent or higher salary. They’re looking for gullible people.

At least double your current HHI. Housing is ridiculous, taxes are insane and gas costs about $1-2 more than anywhere else. We lived there and it is a beautiful state but the economics of living there are ridiculous.

There is no way I would move to San Francisco with kids.

You'll only be able to answer this by looking at housing costs in the specific areas where you'd want to live, considering commuting time, crime, schools (incl. private school tuition costs, potentially) etc. Another consideration will be whether your spouse's job is portable; it's not usually easy to just transfer around the country on your own initiative when you're a federal employee.
Consider state taxes, and local real estate taxes, when comparing the cost of living, too.

I get paid $355k in DC in finance and my husband works for govt and earns $150k. I got a call from recruiter today asking if I would consider interviewing for my same role in San Francisco but with a competitor. How much more would be reasonable for me to move out there with my family of 5? We have 3 kids under 12.
