I give $200 to supplement what they already have.

My kids golf, go to concerts, go to sports games, boat cruises, weekends at the beach, weekends visiting other schools, art/music festivals.

Some people think college is about ramen and house parties but I’d like it for them to do whatever the new area offered. To each his own.

I gave them basically enough to cover a pizza once a week. What kind of entertainment to the $400/month poster? My kids also didn’t buy clothes at school. I paid for their transportation home.

Tell your kid to get a job for 10 hours a week.

Actually, the only idiot here it the OP. OP is raising a child that's going to learn to be a needy, dependent, self-entitled grifter. Seen it time and time again.

Every parent provides for a child in some way. That some parents provide more doesn't automatically mean the child will turn out bad.

We are giving 400 a month outside of normal fixed expenses.

+1. Although summer earnings and winter break earnings may also be sufficient to cover the extras.

We gave $50 a month. We did NOT want our kid working the first semester. It's a big transition if going to college away from home - take the time to get into a routine.

Op this really depends on the campus and how much happens off campus vs on-campus. personally anything beyond $100 a month as emergency money means they have to get a job.

Depends where the college is, how expensive the surrounding area is and how much opportunity they'll have to go off campus. Are they expected to buy their own clothes? Are they rushing? Are they living in a big city?

$350 seems high to me for "entertainment" for a freshman living in a dorm, unless they're living in NYC.

$25 per month

Curious what others feel is an appropriate allowance for a freshman in college. They’ll be living in the dorm, have a full meal plan, and won’t have their car. So, my thought was $350/mo because it’ll mainly be used for entertainment. Just curious what others are doing and if I’m not thinking of something.
