Right. You’re quite so you don’t know what Asians face in America.

White kid do well? Nice! Black kid do well? Amazing!!! Asian kid do well? Probably the work of a tiger mom.

I’m white and I regularly report racist anti-Asian comments here on DCUM. It is really awful to see how endemic it is.

I have heard so many stereotypical comments about Asian American kids and their parents from white parents at our schools. Even from the children of one of the beloved ES teachers. It is so hurtful and very much in line with the attitudes described by the professor.

When was any group's success a PROBLEM?
Surely no one wants too many people on food stamps? No ones wants increased taxes to go to a growing population of poors?

Isn't it great that everyone is self-sufficient and successful?

Mind-boggling.

Yes it IS great. The idea that white people hate Asians is dumb. It’s not true. Unless they happen to be racist white people who are maga then all bets are off.

Naive view. People may not "hate" Asians because, generally speaking, Asians don't cause problems - law abiding, minding their own business kinda people. Anti-Asian hate is really not about race, it's about sucess of Asians or lack thereof by others

Yes, it is about race.
White Americans don’t want other races to be more successful than them. They want to remain at the top, where the power is.

They are happy to open their lands to those they think will not move too far beyond taking care of their homes and lawns. If they come here and do the low paid work of a social worker or work in admin., all good.
But more than that, to a level that is equal to them or surpasses them? No. And that most definitely is about race.

An opinion piece by an Asian parent.

Did you read the piece? It’s an interview with a Tufts professor who studied this phenomenon. Or do you devalue her findings because she is just an “Asian parent”?

So white people are calling for no homework? Can someone explain why any parent would oppose their child learning to engage in self-discipline and sit down and study every night?

I think the opinion is interesting but it doesn’t capture or reflect the large numbers of Asian and Asian American parents who supported the move away from the SAT and grade ranking. The author (whether it’s of the opinion piece or the book author, I’m not sure, though I suspect the former) talks about Asian and Asian American parents like they are a monolith. But they aren’t.

Everyone has heard about the sharply higher rate of teen suicide in Palo Alto. But what is less known outside of the Bay Area is how much those terrible losses were disproportionately of Asian boys. The dialogue in the Bay Area about mental health is complex and multivariate, including within the Asian and Asian American community. I didn’t get the sense the author of the opinion piece, at least, understood that complexity. The book author hopefully does.

I also think the opinion writer is correct to observe there is a great deal of anti-Asian sentiment behind some of these changes.

The word "Asians" makes everything logical, illogical, everything good, bad, everything that's American dream, unacceptable. Yes, discrimination against Asians is still alive and well.
