+1. It’s important he is able to care for himself and pull ups make that possible. Lying on his back to get an adult to put diapers on him isn’t good for him.

How old is the OP’s kid?

If they’re 3-4 years old, is absolutely within the realm of normal to still have a parent around to put on diapers if need be.

My oldest is 8 and I still help him step into pants and shirts on occasion.

No. It isn’t. Unless they have developmental challenges, you shouldn’t be dressing an 8 year old or putting diapers on a 4 year old.

Hmm. I still have to follow up when my 4 yo wipes her butt (she does it, but I have to do it again because she still doesn't know how to get it clean), so I don't think it's weird to be putting a night diaper on a same-age child. I mean, she is independent with her clothes and stuff but still sometimes needs help with specific things (shoes on wrong feet, sticky zipper or tricky button, etc.). I definitely don't feel like my child is 100% on her own with regards to the bathroom or getting dressed at 4. Hopefully at 5? I don't know, I've seen threads about people whose 6 yo kids still don't do a good job wiping their butts and I don't know what you do at that point -- just accept they will always have poop in their underwear? Kids are not always super hygienic.

Besides, PP wasn't talking about dressing her 8 yo, she was saying that sometimes she might help him on with a shirt in a certain circumstance. Like I'm thinking of when we are getting to or leaving the pool, I always feel like we do stuff like this because people's hands are full or they're in a big hurry or something. It's normal to help your kids occasionally with getting dressed. Even when older. They are still children.

Overnight diapers for sure. We just went through this in the last couple weeks. My oldest just turned 8 and still wets the bed. I have 2 smaller kids as well. One less than 2 and a 3 year old. My oldest has been in pull-ups (Goodnites) for a while and they leak about once or twice a week. Weekend before last I didn’t realize he was out until right at bedtime when is when he goes potty one last time before putting it on. So I grabbed one of my 3 year olds size 6 diapers and put it on him. The next day I was planning to go get more Goodnites but my youngest woke up sick and I never made it to the store. So again I just put him in a diaper. Absolutely zero complaints from him, no leaks, and they are way cheaper than goodnites. So I posted on the elementary age group if I was horrible for considering just keeping on using the diapers. Everyone said pull-ups are diapers and if he doesn’t mind and there just at night who cares. So that has been our routine since. Just as before he goes potty one last time just before he climbs in bed which is when I put it on. He hasn’t had one single complaint and he hasn’t leaked a single time. As a single mom with 3 kids in diapers/ pull-ups the switch to all in diapers is saving me a bundle. I am now ordering HEB brand overnight size 7 for both my older boys.

I'm the PP whose 4 yr old went back to diapers to address diaper rash, and you don't need a child that age to lie down for a diaper, especially one that they only wear at night and only ever gets pee in it. We put her diapers on with her standing up and she actually helps us do it -- I hold it in place and she fastens it. And she takes it off on her own and throws it away in the morning. It's really not infantilizing. Pull ups were easier, but there's no reason to make what is essentially a diaper be easy -- it keeps wearing underwear as a motivator and accomplishment.

It's been a long while since we had any of our kids wearing any form of pull-ups/diapers (old mom here). But, I feel like I can describe the nighttime routine we had going on with my middle daughter, who was a late bedwetter (oldest never dealt with this).

Anyways, when DD was around this age, we still used diapers at night. We had no real reason why we didn't use pull-ups, I guess we just never felt like there was a need? At first, we did the same thing as far putting them on standing up. But after the birth of our youngest, I started just putting them on like normal, with her lying down. Changing into a night diaper was NEVER at all a major ordeal in our household, and honestly - after 4 kids - I got so fast at getting night-diapers on butts that it really didn't matter either way. I will say though, I feel like we tended to get less leaks, when night diapers went on with the kiddo lying down. I have no idea why, and have no real evidence to support it, it's just something I distinctly remember from those days. It was never infantilizing, I think because it was done so matter-of-factly..? It's just not something that anyone in our house really batted an eye at in the late evenings.

TL;DR? Do what works best for you OP! Find what works for your family, and go with it.

We were doing pull ups at night but DD was consistently getting diaper rashes and it was miserable. We switched to diapers (she's 4 and long and narrow so we didn't even have to hunt down big diapers) and it got better almost instantly. Way more comfortable.

And anecdotally, I think the diapers have actually helped with her staying dry at night. The diapers are annoying to put on and especially annoying when she goes to the bathroom. So she's more vigilant about emptying her bladder before bed. And lately in the morning, she's been waking up around 5 to pee and taking the diaper off, and then just putting on a pair of underwear before getting back in bed, since putting the diaper back on would be challenging. No accidents. I think we're close to graduating from nighttime diapers, after a whole year of pull ups and then only two months of returning to diapers. Maybe it was just the right time anyway, or maybe clearing up the diaper rash once and for all has helped. But I had been feeling mildly defeated about going back to diapers and now we're almost done completely.

Diapers are built to cinch in at the leg, and pullups are made to not be as tight (so kids can get them on and off.

Some people think diapers are more absorbent, others that pullups are. Personally, I'll swear by an hand towel or two folded inside for extra absorbency every time.

Kind of a logistical question here. Not asking for any potty training related reason or anything. But I'm just curious, for those that have experience with both - which has the downright most absorption possible for nighttime, especially for a Pre-K kid?

1. Nighttime pull-ups? (ie Goodnites)
or
2. Larger sized overnight diapers?

Also as a bonus question, do you change pee-only diapers in the night? For an older child that is fully PT'd in the day, but still pees a LOT at night?
