I think they use a stolen credit card to send you money “by accident”, then delete the card and attach their own bank account info so when you send them money back, it goes into their own account. Then when the person whose card was stolen reports the fraud and the transaction is cancelled, you are out the money that you sent the scammer.

Thanks for this, but I'm still a bit confused. The "you" here would be the person whose credit card was stolen, not the person who received the $600 in their Venmo, right? I'm still not out any money, right?

Thank you for posting about this, OP. I would not necessarily know what to do either and this was very helpful!

If someone “accidentally” sends you money, you can simply tell them to cancel the transaction. You would not need to send money back. If the person doesn’t want to do that, you know it’s a scammer.

Never send money to someone you don’t know.

It is almost certainly a scam. But, if you must communicate with the sender, just send a note stating that all transactions are final and that you have a strict no refund policy.

It is a scam. Don’t send the money back, just contact Venmo.

Someone I don't know sent me money on Venmo. They then sent a request for me to send it back. It it's truly someone who made a mistake, I don't want to keep her money. But I'm also concerned it could be a scam. How can I verify?
