Audis are understated design-wise compared to BMWs, and don't have the brand cachet of MB. They have really good technology and interior amenities.

I'd say it's for people who want good tech and comfort, but don't want to be to showy.

If you know, you know. I drive an Audi that looks like a regular boring vehicle, but people who know cars well will come up to me and talk about it, as they notice the small styling difference that denote it's a rare model (the RS line).

People who seek reliability above all else are not the same people who shop for luxury vehicles. The most reliable is hands down Toyota, maybe Honda comes close. If you are in the market for both reliability and luxury, try Lexus; although luxury car enthusiasts consider Lexus identical to Toyota, not a true luxury vehicle.

I am interested in an Audi sedan because I have heard that they have the quietest interiors. I suspect people who purchase these cars are in the market for Mercedes and BMW, but there is some combination of features/styling where Audi appeals the most.

Audis look more sporty, like a testosterone daddy car. A BMW is more like conformist preppy daddy car. Mercedes maybe more international? I love Mercedes but no longer drive one.

Those who like getting "good deals" by buying used. Audis depreciate like crazy.

Someone who pays way too much for their vehicles. I drive a 5.7L V8 hemi that I paid 5200 bucks for. I'd totally take that Audi in a street race, and come out way ahead, since all I'm paying for is gas and insurance.

This is how we ended up with an Audi. Now it's just a matter of habit.

It's likely the small differences in cost, features, available options, and styling. All three brands a positioned similarly in the market, but their vehicles are not identical. For some people, Audi ticks more boxes for them for a specific type of car than the choices available from MB or BMW. Other people could just as easily pick a MB or Audi. It's a bit like Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. Marketed to similar demographics but variety in the specific offerings.
