OP, with an energetic young dog, I'd strongly, strongly recommend you get a 50-foot leash and bring that to whatever dog-friendly cabin. Second the folks who advise not trusting a cabin fence (nor the willingness of your pup to jump the fence).

It would, yes. You can at least Google “airbnb fenced yard [state]” to try and narrow it down.

This is OP. That place looks fantastic! When we can go on a longer trip we will definitely try out that place and report back.

This trip we need to stay closer.

To be clear, we don't leave the dog unattended, not even outside. I grew up on a farm so I know how to walk the perimeter and check the fences (probably not a skill a lot of people in the DMV have, haha). Yes, the dog barks if we are outside sitting on a porch and its stuck inside. We are in the midst of training. In this situation, if we want the dog to be outside with us we use a long leash which allows some exploring, but it sure would be nice to just sit while the dog is exploring and sniffing and chasing balls while we could relax.

We'll check out some of the other recommendations. We don't want to leave the dog at home and also as part of the trip will go on hikes (leashed). Where I grew up we actually had bears nearby so I get that issue. They used to use the trees in our backyard as scratching posts.

I use a long cable "tie-out" that is great for this purpose. just make sure it is attached to a harness (Not a collar which can be yanked off). I wouldn't leave pup unsupervised but it gives him more freedom and you can read your book.

Stop taking dogs on vacation. No one wants to hear your "energetic" dog barking all day & night. Leave the animal at home or board it.

I was just thinking the same thing OP! It would be so nice while on vavation to have a fenced area where the dog can go out and run or investigate at their will.

Definitely do not do this. I live in a cabin community. 1) Bears are real here 2) dogs get out of those fences all the time. We literally have pets that have been "wild" for over a year before someone could catch them.

It is way way way farther than 2.5 hours but we saw quite a few in the Brevard area outside Asheville.

OP here. We have a very energetic young dog and we are constantly walking him, he isn't good at listening off leash yet. We would just like to relax and let him play in the yard, chase balls, do his roomies while we relax in a chair with a beer and a book. When I say energetic, I mean super energetic.

If we go out on the porch or outside to enjoy the weather or scenery, he will bark to be out there with us.

We really do enjoy having him around, he is a great dog. We don't want to kennel him, we want him with us but also want a break.

Is there a particular cabin at Lydia? We don't care if it is remote. We looked on their website and saw pet friendly cabins but didn't see where they denote fenced yard.

Lydia Mountain has some really nice cabins that allow pets. No fences, but it's pretty isolated there.

I think it would be a big mistake to trust the fence in a rental. Just use a leash.

Anyone have any good cabins or vacation homes to recommend within a 2.5 hour drive? We are a couple with a medium sized dog just looking to get away for maybe 3 nights. We don't really care where, we just want it to be clean, comfortable, and space for the dog to run free in a yard.
