The Contest prep classes would be entirely useless if your child does not have a solid background in both Algebra I and Geometry, as they would then be learning concepts in isolation. If your child already has strong mastery of Algebra and Geometry, then they might be useful. AoPS also has Number Theory and Counting & Probability classes, both covering areas common in contest math and not generally covered well in regular school math. At the highest levels of Mathcounts competition, Algebra 2 is quite helpful as well, since many problems can be more easily solved by trig than they can with a geometric approach.

PP, with all due honesty, why are you posting in this thread and the other thread in the other forum? It's painfully obvious that you have no idea what you're talking about. Let me guess: your kid participated last year and qualified for State only because VA took the top half of the competitors, and now you think you're some kind of expert at all things Mathcounts. The big leagues are completely different.


My kid learned Algebra and Geometry basics by taking this class prior to having completed AoPS Algebra and Geometry. They also did those but not until 6th grade.

You can see on the MathCounts website which schools are registered for the competition series. Likely a small list right now.

Most ES AAP centers have a Mathcounts team. Also, if your school isn't participating, you can enroll your child as a non-school competitor.

Mathcount is a middle school competition. You need to be 6th grade to compete.

Aops.com has lots of mathcounts practice. There is mathcounts trainer, alcumus which has higher level questions up thru high school, and for the win.

Mathcounts posts the questions and answers for last year's state and chapter tests. They're here: https://www.mathcounts.org/resources/past-competitions The cutoff for making nationals from VA is generally around 38 points on the State round. Algebra 2 helps, but the most important thing is to be very solid on Algebra 1 and Geometry.

Don't select AOPS level based on Mathcounts. Select the level that is appropriate for your child. AOPS has diagnostics that show which math class would be the most appropriate.
