Subarus are a great value. They hold their resale value too. I loved my Subaru.

One reason we did this is that it's usually easier to service Subarus. Meaning that if we need to get something replaced or worked on, we'll have our car back sooner. And it will generally cost less. More standard parts for Subarus and more places that have experience working on them.

I am not rich and I’ve had several Outback wagons for most of my adult driving life. I ski and lived in snowy/beach places. I presently live in a semi-rich (upper middle class…) neighborhood that’s directly adjacent to a super SUPER rich neighborhood and Subarus are in every single driveway and out front of every home of both neighborhoods. I think Subaru (esp the nicer models) crosses the middle and upper socioeconomic line very easily. Semi-rich and rich people ski and have to load up the gold retrievers! And kids, soccer stuff, etc etc.

We're pretty comfortable financially and we own two Subarus. Like a PP above, we're not car people. Interestingly, neither are our kids, who are in their early 20s and who have significant trustfunds courtesy of their grandparents. I'll also note that you see a lot of Subarus in NH towns with a significant population of well-heeled retirees.

There is an ongoing narrative on DCUM that wealthy people buy cheap cars because "they are very careful with their money." If you actually are wealthy you know this is not true lol

+1 I guess maybe it depends on your definition of "rich" though.

I have had a subaru for 18 years. The car before the subaru was a mercedes slk. This was when our HHI was about $360K 20 years ago. Maybe that's not really "rich" per dcum standards, but again, this was 20 years ago.

The interior of subarus aren't great. As a PP stated, it's economical. It's the performance and reliability that's good.

My spouse is looking to get a new car soon, and looking at a Subaru. We will be a two Subaru household, possibly 3 now that DC is 18. Might give DC my car and get a new subaru for myself.

We have one and some people might call us rich. We could certainly afford a much nicer car from a luxury brand. But neither DH or I are car people and we don't drive a ton. We spend our money on other things. Based on how reliable its been I have a feeling it will become our DD's car when she is old enough to drive. She was in a car seat when we bought it.

We bought one, and then I started noticing how many of our neighbors have them. They are cars for upper middle class and rich people who are proud of how practical they are.

We are thinking about getting one and we are def not rich.

They're not cheap but they're not fancy and rich people do drive them because rich people can be practical.

Per the bougie thread, I'd never think of Subarus as fancy. They're cheap and economical!
