I don’t like it, but since you are Italian, it works.

I love it and have known quite a few Italian Americans named Alessandra. The preferred short version among them seems to be Ale (pronounced like Ollie).

I know an Alexandra called Alexandra and never shortened.

I love the name Alessandra! Just name her that and call her that and let the chips fall as they may.

My daughters best friend (she is Italian) is named Alessandra. She likes to be called Alex, and is called Alé by her family. She gets a lot of Alexandra, which she doesn’t like.

+1 I love the name and you can call her by her full name insistently but she may decide as a teen or adult to shorten it. However, if she wants to use the whole name, most people won’t insist once she corrects them once or twice (a few people will but that’s not the end of the world).

- Elizabeth never Liz or Lizzie

Personally, I love the name - largely because long ago I worked with a postdoc from Milan named Alessandra who was really nice and super smart.

Most of us (Americans, Northern Europeans, south & East Asians) called her Alessandra, but it IS long. Even she shortened her name to Ale with an accent mark over the e (not pronounced quite like Allie), and her Italian friends used the nickname.

Be prepared for mispronunciations: is it Allesandra ( like Alexander) or AllesSAWNDRA.

See that all the time with the name Sandra.

It’s a beautiful name. She may decide she wants a nickname; you only have so much control over that (for any name).

People will try to shorten every name. But Alessandra is as long as Elizabeth and I have known an Elizabeth who goes by Elizabeth.

Alessandra is a beautiful name.

I think people will try to call her Allie.

We have a two syllable Italian last name that ends in “i”. DH was born in Italy; I am first generation from Italy.

I love the name but don’t like any shortened nicknames (Allie, Sandy) for it. Is it too much to expect her to be called Alessandra?
