That sounds even worse. We wouldn’t be able to afford our basic townhome!

You were complaining that you work too hard to have basically the “same” as your in laws. You clearly do recognize you have a better standard of living than they do. Quit whining. If you don’t want to work so hard, you don’t have to, you will just have to lower your standards. Just sounds like you’re bitter that you didn’t get stimulus money.

Then why haven’t you quit your job, sold your house, and moved near your SIL? Those choices are open to you. Is the place that they rent such a unicorn that you couldn’t also rent one?

Why do you think you work harder than they do?

We felt we should have earned some stimulus money, we got nothing. And $10k is a lot!

@ 300k HHI, why did you feel that way?

Uh, because life is expensive.

You sound greedy and ungrateful.

You are building net worth, they are not.

Sounds like you should ask your SIL for some financial advice.

Or you could sell your house, have one of you quit your job, and move to where they are.

Or you could realize that you are undoubtedly building wealth through your home ownership, and also probably have fat retirement accounts, whereas they do not. And you could be grateful for the incredibly large amount you have rather than being indignant that your standard of living isn’t higher than your SIL’s.

Sounds like your SIL and BIL are also working a lot, earning much less, and probably saving less. They have kids who may need a lot more help, financial and otherwise, than yours. I’m sorry, what was your question?

You own a house (and associated costs), they don’t.
You live here, they live there.
They have a SAH parent, you do not.

DH and I work hard to make a combined $300k. We live in a townhome that recently
appraised for $1.3m and our kids go to highly rated nearby public schools. We visit local free public parks. We go on mediocre beach vacations for a week.

My SIL is the sole breadwinner for her family of 4 and she makes about $120k. Her husband is a stay at home dad who helps take care of two special needs kids.

They rent a townhome in an ok area but still the same county as us and their kids go to local public schools. They visit local parks and go on mediocre beach vacations. They got $10k in stimulus funds that we did not qualify for.

It seems that we are basically living the same lifestyle yet we work so much harder for the exact same things. What gives? Why are we working so hard to get the basics?
