Why would anyone commit to this when they could freelance as a sub for MORE money and MORE flexibility?

I worked as a student monitor all last year. I did have lunch duty everyday. Breakfast duty, hallway duty. And more Often worked as a substitute teacher. Covered classes when teachers when teachers were in meetings. Worked with small groups. Basically the same as IA’s. I was assigned to the same school. Paid $15.73 an hour. But did not get sub pay even when I worked a full day as a sub.
I got a job this year as an IA. Because I wanted a little more money, and benefits

If you need a job that aligns with your kids’ school schedule there are not many choices. That is annoying though, substitute teachers get pay more. I thought student monitor was more of a hallway, recess and lunch supervisor

FCPS already has lunch monitors as a part-time job and teachers oversee recess. They want these monitors to cover classes.

A monitor will have assigned duties just like teachers and IAs do, and that may include covering a class that doesn’t have a sub. If the monitor is good at the job they may be offered a full time position as an IA. -NP

What is an IA?

Instructional Assistant- they help out in the classroom.

+1. They’re supposed to be monitoring hallways and covering for lunch periods. They end up working as subs or IAs because no one with college coursework wants to be an IA for $20 per hour or a sub for $18 per hour. It’s basically a cheap attempt for FCPS to hire people with zero college experience to work in these positions without explicitly lowering the standards.

Yes, what duties were listed in the description beyond “monitoring a class/students” when the teacher is not present? (i.e. sub)

I can't believe they get anyone to take that job for minimum wage.
