We didn’t like our tour or the location, so it’s off the list.

Every tour guide has to share their pronouns. That’s no problem but they were all white, and there were 20 of them.

Campus looks pretty. One area near river floods.

The tour dragged on for 2.5 hours walking through 100 degree heat and they didn’t even provide a cup of water or refreshments. Also, it was the first college tour where we had to pay for parking!?!?

They didn’t seem to have it together to create a welcoming experience. The cherry on top was the 24 yo admissions rep saying we should apply for $500 dollar scholarships. Sure. I’d love to have child spend hours writing an essay to **maybe** get $500 and then do that multiple times with multiple scholarships.

While UM grads such as myself are obligated to disparage MSU, truth be told, it is a very good school. It has a pretty campus and is on par academically with PSU (and actually with most BigTen universities for most undergrad majors). Most alums I know also seem to have enjoyed their time there -- although I have to admit that all the Sparties I know were native Michiganders.

Big Ten schools have issues covering up sexual assaults.

My best friend went there and did really well (she's now a doctor). I visited her a few times and really enjoyed the campus.

OP, you mentioned GMU. It’s also large at 39,000 but a much different feel. My DD lived all four years in the dorms so it felt more like a Slac to her. GMU is known for its Batchelor degree in Special Education. I know many people who got their Master’s and doctorates in special education at GMU. It’s a very large program . Good luck.

My husband and I are both State grades. We absolutely love the school and we bleed Spartan green. It was a great experience. As you know, it is a huge campus and a massive school, with a student body of over 40,000 people for undergrad and grad. It also is gorgeous, probably one of the top ten prettiest schools in the country. Sports are huge there and the social life revolves around sports and Greeks. For example, the football stadium seats 75,000. And it is frequently packed. Imagine that for a college football game. Basketball is similar. Beyond the social activities, both of us got incredible educations. I don't know much about the education department or, specifically, the SPED program, at State but they are the founders of the CMP program, which is a highly respected math education program used across the country/world, including school systems in the DMV.

The main downside of State is the weather. It is cold and snowy. As long as your daughter is okay with that then she'll be fine. The campus bus system runs like clockwork so it is no big deal to get from the dorms to a classroom all the way across campus very easily. Also, a lot of students move off campus after freshman year and there is plentiful good quality rentals that students use. East Lansing has a lot of bars and restaurants, go figure, and it is a pretty cool scene.
