Maybe an ankle tracker and more conditions on release would have helped in this case and is something that could be looked into.

It is becoming more common since the State Attorney General (Frosh) really cracked down on bond, since it does unfairly penalize lower-income people. And the county didn't beef up our pretrial supervision resources to compensate. It just doesn't get covered much because we really don't have good local news coverage. Nobody is doing any real investigative reporting.

I wonder how much it costs to increase pre-trial release supervision versus just increasing cash bail.

It definitely means they need more coordination between the State's Attorney and the Police. And to a certain extent Pretrial over in Corrections, who should have been supervising this guy while he was pending trial. Police often know who might be a repeat offender. They should have some input into who gets held on bond and what level of pretrial supervision someone gets, if they are released pending trial.

I'm not saying police should make the decision, but the State's Attorney needs to consult with them first. And make recommendations to the judge/district court commissioner.

I swear I'm not an ad for this guy, but since you bring it up, Tom DeGonia would better coordinate between SAO and police. And people at higher risk of reoffending wouldn't be cut loose so easily.
