Op here: it’s my husband’s cousin. They are not super close so that’s why he doesn’t want to ask. They came over a few months ago to our barbecue and said it was “fancy” (it was not).

I’m not sure if they know exactly how dressy white tie really is. The invites are rustic looking and match the theme of the barn/outdoor venue but it says white tie.

They are my husband's relatives so I don't feel comfortable calling for clarification. Luckily we will be staying down the street in a hotel. I can pack white tie appropriate clothes for both my husband and myself. Worst case is I'll wear a formal garden party outfit, if I get there and people are truly wearing white tie, I can dash back to the hotel and change.

Would this bother you if you were the couple? I just don't want to embarrass myself if I show up under dressed.


Why can't your husband call and ask? Don't tell me, let me guess. This is his baby sister who has dreamed of a Pinterest wedding for years.

Whatever the bride intends, I would be so surprised if everyone else wears ball gowns. Could you feel it out under the guise of not wanting to wear same color/dress/ as wedding party or either of the moms to see what at least those folks are wearing? In general would you expect these people to understand what various dress codes mean?

You will not embarrass yourself if you show up in garden party attire. People will look stupid in “white tie” in broad daylight at a barn. I second the PP’s suggestion to wear a long dress—long looks formal even if the overall look of the dress is more sundress-y/garden party-esque.

I was planning to wear something that says "formal tea/garden party".

but I can find something longer and maybe a tad fancier. I just don't want to wear a ballgown to a farm in the morning

They clearly have no clue what they are asking. Wear a pretty, summery dress and be done with it. Maybe a long dress because that kind of checks the formality box if people are dressed up, but you can find something light and comfortable.
