Subject: basic car ownership / maintenance class for new driver?
Start with having them read the owners manual, cover to cover. If the manual points out something under the hood, get under the hood so they know where everything is. It's really important that they understand all the signals and warnings on the dash, how to check and refill fluids, and that sort of thing, and it will all be in the manual. Beyond that, there isn't really much more that can be done with a late model car. I wouldn't even change a tire anymore and won't let my kids do it either. Too dangerous. Just get them a AAA membership and call it a day.

I taught my kids these things. Takes no time at all. Buy the manual for your kid's car, and tell the kid to read all of it, and then quiz them. Easy.

My dad had me and brother changing oil, rotating tires, changing wipers, washing and waxing cars since we were 12. By 16 we could do alternators, tune ups, starter motors, batteries and by 18 brake jobs.
Don’t give him a car or a ride anywhere till he masters basics

I don't think they have the next one scheduled yet.

This is OP. Those were examples. Another is how to change a tire. I can think of a couple of hours’ worth of basic car maintenance instruction that would be valuable for new drivers. My wuestion was whether anyone knows of such a class. Like the PP, I had checked Montgomery College and didn’t find one.

They do? Please share. Montgomery College does not.

Wiper fluid and tire pressure may take a minute combined to teach. Oil changing (assuming proper disposal) is a PIA now. The only people that do it are people who like being the guy who changes their own oil. If he wants to be that guy, he can learn from youtube.

It would take 3 minutes to show two of the things on your list.

My teen is a new driver and this summer seems a good time for him to learn the basics of car maintenance like how to change the oil, wiper fluid, check tire pressure, etc. Does anyone know of an in person class for this in the DC area?
(Yes I can teach him these things but he has lots of free time this summer and I don’t …)
