I've been married for 23 years and neither dh nor I keeps tabs on the other this way.

It would depend on a lot more details, including if he had any personal negative experiences, like a person close to him being kidnapped where it would have helped, but at face value this is a big red flag.

Was there something that precipitated the request? He couldn’t find you at fireworks and you weren’t answering the phone? You were late to dinner and he was wondering when you would get there? My spouse and I share location for practical reasons, so I’m not opposed. With a boyfriend I would wonder why he brought it up.

A couple i am friends with have done it since they were dating. I love them dearly but I would find it odd.

If you’re not comfortable with it, don’t do it. Listen to your gut.

My now husband asked me to do this once when we were dating - when I was heading out to drive by myself three states away during a blizzard. That was reasonable.

If this is a boyfriend you've had for a year or less, aren't sure if you want to marry him, just say "Nah, I'm not comfortable with that" breezily and see what his response is. That will tell you a lot.
