Several years ago, DH did not realize his military dependent ID was expired and the guard at the gate confiscated the card because it was expired. When he went to get a new card, he was told to complete the forms for a lost/stolen card, including a police report. He explained that the card was not lost or stolen and it was confiscated because it had already expired. It's been awhile so I don't remember how he eventually got a new card (DH is not on active duty, it was for the dependent military ID) but it was quite an ordeal.
