Men scared by how easy it is to be accused of rape (not defending rapists but definitely false accusations out there)
Gender roles and dating rules are confusing/changing and fluid therefore many not playing the game
A culture of seclusion over videogames and obscure interests (always was there but I guess there’s an increase of virtual activities so that people don’t have to meet face to face)
Promiscuity out of fashion in general, hard to get a sexual partner without committing

Article which is sited. Seem like people are just jumping to conclusions that fit their world views.
Looks like it started in 2012. It is not virgins but no sex in the past year. Both sexes were at roughly at 15% in 2012 male jumped from 15 to 28 and women leveled off with an uptick and another leveling off at 18%. The age group is really large 18-30. After 25 you are not considered young. You are in adulthood. Article also talks about 18-34 living with their parents. 35% of males and 29% of females. That is a scary number.
I think something happen to the data here. Maybe the males are defining sex differently vs women ans the increase of people living at home.
It's the rise of social media and gaming. Look at the timeline, it syncs up perfectly. Social media skews your views about attraction and what you "deserve" in a partner (women and men). Gaming distracts from a career and IRL relationships (vast majority men).
