The demographics of the kids who try out is a reflection of the demographics of the school - Yorktown has the largest number of UMC white kids who want to play sports and are financially able to participate in athletics of any school in the Liberty District. At other schools the focus is more on academics and/or there are more kids who can't spare the time to be on teams because they are working part-time jobs.

That happens even at our private....(double painful since it is pay to play and pay to learn ).

Many coaches still listen to politicking parents and will just fill based on team the player is coming from vs how they actually play in front of them.

You “heard” based on one rumor/complaint on a Facebook page about one team. YHS has many many sports teams. Don’t spread falsehoods about the hard work of lots of students based on one (likely false, my student plays a different sport) rumor.

Agree with everything already said. Meridian boys fell just short of winning states this year. Your son will get recruited based on club play; hs can compliment but not replace that exposure.

As others have said, it’s in FCC, not Arlington. Do your research on all of that before choosing this school for a soccer team to make sure it’s a good fit. There are a lot of options where your son can play soccer year round.

This post has good info. Meridian is located in Falls Church City, which has its own small school district. Since the school is smaller, it generally plays similarly-sized schools that are located farther away. Yorktown, W-L, and Wakefield are the high schools in Arlington; Wakefield is in south Arlington.

From where are you moving? Soccer is played at a very high level in Arlington and making either the Yorktown or W-L high school teams is difficult. Tons of kids who play travel don’t make it. Travel soccer continues through high school, though, so even if your son doesn’t play for his high school team he could potentially still play travel throughout his high school career.

The majority of the kids that play for Yorktown are on the highest level travel teams at Arlington and McLean. It’s very difficult to make the team, very good talent. They often win championships. As you probably realize the demographic of those schools mean that pretty much majority of the kids can afford travel programs.

Yes, both teams are fairly competitive. Definitely not a guarantee to make the team.

Considering neighborhoods. My rising 7th grade son loves playing soccer and wants to play in high school. He plays on a travel team - he's good but not amazing. I could see him playing NCAA division 2 someday. Is making the soccer team at YHS and WL so competitive that capable kids get cut? If that's the case it makes me think Meridian might be a better fit, so he can be bigger fish in a smaller pond.
