Be aware that in many states, doctors are explicitly prohibited from writing covid vaccine exemptions by their state licensing board. Also, the ease or difficulty of getting a medical exemption approved by the university varies quite widely - some schools, perhaps no problem, others, next to impossible absent a PEG allergy. In addition, colleges can require those with exemptions to follow different masking or quarantine protocol, and can even ask them to leave campus in the event of an outbreak

Pp here. Most don’t. It cost him a day of fever and headache, but it’s the cost of college. It’s no different than the numerous childhood vaccines that the college requires that also caused fevers when they were too young to complain.

Then you should have insisted your kid pick a school that did not require the booster.

It is unfortunately "necessary" if your child's school still requires it, though it is bad policy. A few schools dropped the booster for the time being, e.g. Northwestern, Cornell, Duke, Univ of Rochester, acknowledging the uselessness.

I would wait as long as possible, until the school's deadline, to see what will happen with fall boosters, as last week FDA discussed new omicron bivalent versions. It's unclear whether those would be broadly recommended by CDC for younger (<50) age groups without data (as occurred with the first booster) and then mandated by colleges.
