OP, our son rows and, because of the pandemic, wasn't able to compete much the last 2 years. He wasn't sure he could make it onto a D3 team. It turns out that he could and will row for a NE SLAC. Don't assume. Send a video of him rowing, his 2K erg time, and whatever wins he has had. Good luck!

A lot of the SLACS in the NE have club crew. A coach told my DC years ago that they don’t help with admission, but would love to have my DC on the team. Of course the hard thing was getting into the college.

Lehigh has a D1 team and tends to take a lot of walk ons and recruit current students. If he’s looking for somewhere, its worth reaching out

Beware that while the better club teams welcome walk-ons, they eventually downsize the team by erg score and commitment level. That means waking at 5am, six DOW for several hours of practice. In addition, you are expected to do separate weight workouts, and, if possible, get in an extra row in the afternoon. Not all programs are like this, but it’s typical of UVA and Michigan.

Boston College, Michigan too. Many club teams are quite good and compete against varsity teams in some competitive regattas, such as Dad Vail.

Loyola MD used to have one and maybe they still do or it might be a full-on sport now.

I’m a rower, and that simply isn’t true. Crew is very expensive and limited by number of boats and size of boathouse. If the school has a varsity program they probably won’t also have a club program because there isn’t enough space and equipment. Large colleges in major rowing cities like Boston, Philly, and DC where there are lots of club boathouses for the public might be more likely to have a club program that uses these facilities. All of this is to say it’s probably not as easy as “they all have club programs.”
