It may have changed but when my kid was looking at high schools over 5 years ago, Einstein (Sligo) didn’t offer math beyond calculus BC. Blair had more math and science options than Einstein.

Since the older sibling is going to Blair, then younger child can go to Blair too because of the DCC sibling preference rule. Or at least they had that option a few years ago. So they might not be committing to HS right now.

The sibling preference rule doesn't apply if the older sibling is in a magnet program.

In theory this is true but they don't enforce it (or just don't check that the sibling is there in the magnet). I know two siblings who have gone to Blair under "sibling preference" even though their older sibling was in the magnet.

I've heard great things about the Eastern magnet, but not about the school itself. The building is very old, and outside the magnet, the classes are hit or miss. In the past, the magnet separation really affected the environment of the nonmag classes. Maybe now that the magnet is lottery, that would have improved.

I've heard good things about Sligo.

PP here. Ugh, you’re totally right. Sorry OP! In that case go to Eastern so you can get access to Blair’s STEM classes.

Yes there is. It’s called AIM and HIGH. DD is in these classes at Sligo. Ms. Chichester is awesome and was MCPS teacher of the year a couple years ago.

We had a child in the Eastern magnet and one that went to Sligo. Sligo hands down has more involved parents and had more of a community feel and had more fun activities. Eastern’s teachers and admin were good, but the school is overcrowded and long overdue for renovations, so it just has an older feel.

We had a good experience with Sligo, including the local magnet math and history classes. I believe that they offer a computer science elective and definitely chorus.

Hard to know much for sure, as Sligo just got a new principal, and Eastern is about to get a new one in the coming weeks.

We will be moving within the DCC area and have narrowed down our neighborhoods to either the Sligo MS or Eastern MS areas.

We have a rising 6th grader who was identified for both magnet lotteries, but wasn't selected for a spot, so they will be in both the local magnet math and magnet history classes.

They are mostly interested in STEM electives and extracurriculars, but also want to take Spanish. (Chorus would be an acceptable elective alternative if there is no STEM elective available, but they'd probably still be disappointed.)

Which should we choose?

We also have a rising 9th grader who will be in a magnet at Blair, but that won't change based on our moving.
