It's the traditional Welsh nickname for David of Dafydd.

If it's the Welsh nickname, that's not weird at all. If you want to call him that, go ahead! That said, some people will probably call him Dave.

It’s a weird nickname but everyone’s going to think you’re saying DaVe and call him Dave. Regardless, there’s no way to get around the fact that he’ll eventually be called Dave by people.

Update, I googled. Yes, Welsh nickname for David/Dafydd.

And I would assume it's pronounced "dye" because that's how I've heard it pronounced before.

It's a very uncommon nickname, but not really "weird." Do you say DAY or DYE?

I've never heard of a David called Dai, so in my experience that's an uncommon nickname.

My uncle was named David who went by "Dai". Is that a weird name to go by? DS is named David after him, and we planned to call him Dave but every time I do I can't stop thinking of the Kevin Klein movie!
