Your kid comes to school they will be marked present. The school is not going to count it against your kid if they get picked up early for an appointment especially on a half day. Usually with half day schedules if you're picking them up around noon they are either having lunch

Teacher here. Attendance didn’t count for anything this year. I wouldn’t worry about missing some days here and there

OP here. Didn't want to bog down original question with too many details, but since people are asking...

We are not striving for perfect attendance at all. But we have a very close family member getting married overseas in the spring that we will be pulling our son out for (number of days still TBD, but likely at least one full week) so I'm trying to minimize other absences earlier in the year.

DS is in elementary school.

In high school, attendance is taken in each class, so your question is a moot point. He would be marked absent in the periods he missed. If a lower grade, they usually take attendance in the morning, so he wouldn't be marked absent. Just send a note that he has to leave early that day.

Is perfect attendance still a thing? I've put four all the way through MCPS and I never heard of attendance being a concern (or awarded). Is that what you are working on?

Does it really matter if he has an absence?

Fwiw if he's in elementary and they take roll in the AM--he'll already be counting present for the day. In MS and HS they take attendance per class and it's a different story.

But again--why does it matter if he has an absence?

How many hours does a student have to be at school to not be counted as absent for that day?

My son has an appointment on an early release day in September. I'm trying to move the appointment, but it was difficult to get so I want to plan accordingly.

His school starts at 9:25 am and early release is at 1:20 pm. If I pick him up at 12 pm, will that count towards his attendance for the day? How about 11:30 am?
