Colleges have been doing direct mail since at least the 80s.

How does no one remember getting these brochures in high school? Why are you blindsided by college marketing?

What year did you graduate high school? I graduated in 1993 and didn't get any marketing material from colleges--and I was a decent student that got into many colleges. The only marketing material I received was from ITT tech.

1992.

1994

Who is blindsided?

I mostly wanted to know how they would know if my kid had a good semester or not. Must be weird to be a kid who gets a D and then receives this letter saying “Due to your good grades, we hope you will apply…”

Seems mean of the school.

Don’t you know any first generation students? I guess not. Otherwise, you would be outside your bubble more and not asking “didn’t you get these in high school…”

I see your privilege showing. Not everyone had the life, money, and support you had, you know.

Haha. Thanks.

I’m used to the 4-color brochure spam. 🤣 The boring letters strike a different chord, though. They sound so…earnest. 😂

Correct. They mean zilch. Colleges cannot know your child's high school grades unless your child's counselor sent a transcript, which they cannot do unless your child requests it.

Spam. Get used to it

Colleges send letters on 8.5 x 11 paper saying they recognize child has done well this semester…

Are high schools sending grades or lists of students to colleges? How would a college know if the student did well?

Do they send these to everyone and just hope the message resonates with those who actually did well?
