We looked into the credit for my daughter who is a rising sophomore at UMD and we didn’t think it was worthwhile. She went into UMD with 18 credits.

The test was NOT waived for 2022. The kids did take it.

I thought they have to pass a test to earn the credit.

OP here -- Yes, he passed the test. I don't really care if a college takes the credit, more wondering if colleges would see it on his high school transcript and that could help with admissions. That would be the only reason I can see to pay the $$.

OP, can you please elaborate? Is this an MCPS course that qualifies a student to get college credit at RIT? Is the test conducted by RIT? Where (which school) did he take it? Thanks!

It is offered at various MSs in the county. Rosa Parks, for example.

If the kids takes the class and passes the test (and pays $225), they can possibly get college credit for the class. However, our IED teacher warned us that UMD doesn’t accept the credit.

What is PLTW?

NP here - yes, there are 5 courses in PLTW that students can start taking as early as 8th grade. In 2020 and 2021, they waived the test requirement but in 2022 they had to meet both the class grade and test criteria.

They see the course (IED) on the HS transcript. If your child completes the 5 PLTW courses, that’s notable for engineering school admission. The college credit is useful as elective credit at least. If your kid ends up at RIT, it’s more useful to satisfy core requirements. I consider it like an expensive, but already know result, AP exam.

$225? That's a bargain!

Debating about this for my son also. Doesn't seem worth the $225. I mean, if he's going into engineering, this likely won't mean much.

The PP is correct that you have to pass a test to earn the credit. Students who took IED and passed the test received this letter.

When my kid took the class 5+ years ago, passing the final, in class exam AND paying money was required to get the credit. We did not end up paying for credit.
