The airport used to have a shuttle to Udvar Hazy if you really want a museum

No need to go to Tyson's, the gang hangout, Dulles Town Center is a great mall and there is also lots of fine shopping in that general area otherwise as well. You nitwits characterizing that area as dollar stores, vape shops, etc are clearly slow and know pretty much nothing about that part of the DMV.

What a ridiculous question, OP. You can't do much of anything, regardless of where you are, if your friend only has a few hours. If she had at least a day, you could go to one of the beautiful wineries in the Leesburg/Purcellville area. You could go antiquing and have lunch. Basically, the "suburbs" are charming and interesting if you manage to get your nose out of the air. I'd far prefer one of the above suggestions to racing around a dirty, sweaty city.

I wouldn’t go to Tysons after last week’s shooting. If gangs are at Tysons now, I’m staying away.

Lots of great ethnic food in NoVa. I don't have suggestions close to Dulles, because I live in MD, but I bet there are great options.

Eat at a restaurant at Dulles unless there’s something specific she wants to do like air and space out there. There’s no reason to go out to eat at the suburban sprawl that is Dulles as opposed to having a leisurely meal at the airport

I would pick a restaurant among the hundreds in the Dulles area and then relax and chat and eat for hours.

If there was really nothing to talk about to fill the time I'd stop by the Dulles Town Center and do some shopping.

Question: If a friend was only in town for a few hours and you were in DC would you seriously go to a museum???

How long are they in? How much time before they have to go through security again? I think you are overestimating how much time you have to move around and do things.

What about a winery.

I have a friend coming through just for a few hours and flying out of Dulles. If she were flying out of Reagan National we could meet up in the city at literally dozens of interesting places - so many museums and destinations, then we could grab a bite. How are we supposed to occupy ourselves out in the suburbs? Is there someplace worth going? Where do we meet? Is Udvar Hazy the ONLY thing to do? Seriously I need some good ideas!
