This. I always think it’s weird when people say child free children don’t understand how much work children are. Him, yes, maybe we do, and maybe that’s why we don’t have kids! Now if you’re talking about a 25-year-old who doesn’t have kids and wants them, maybe that’s a different story. But someone who is 40 inches and not have kids? Yeah, actually, maybe we do know how much work it is. To me it looks indescribably exhausting and I don’t think I could do it

I thought I knew everything there was to know about having kids. And then I had them and I realized I knew nothing.

A few times, a friend has made a clueless remark about this or that plans and I have to remind them I can’t do X and Z because of the kid factor and working out child care before committing to plans, but that’s no more “clueless” than me suggesting plans to a dog owner without fully thinking through their dog responsibilities. Like, why should we all think through each other’s lenses all the time? Speak up for your own logistics when making plans or whatever.

Yep. I have a childless friend who was a nanny for about a year, and she loves to dole out advice. It’s hard not to mention that if you get to hand the child back to its parents at the end of the day and resume your normal life, you have no f-ing clue what it’s like to actually parent.

If they’re not lecturing you on how to parent, why do they need to get it?

Yeah, we know. You are not the first one to raise kids.

One individual cannot experience most things, and that's fine as long as they don't presume to judge others.

My oldest was born with special needs and our lives revolve around him, even though we also give our attention to our other kids. Will anyone know what we've been through? Other parents who have kids with special needs, maybe, although each one is different.

I would say even babysitting and nannying doesn’t give you the full picture. I used to nanny and having your own child is a whole different thing.

But, no, you don’t know what it’s like to be a parent until you are one.
