VAVA K12 is the public online charter school. It is free.

It is different than Virtual Virginia. I’m really not sure how it works.

One thing to note is that VAVA K12 is not NCAA accredited, so make sure that is not an issue for you for college sports. The private K12 academy is. I’m not sure why there is a discrepancy.

My kids did VAVA for 6th and 7th. There are SOLs just like in in person public school.

We opted out of SOLs (I guess it is technically called refusal) for everything except Algebra 1, since that is needed for a verified high school credit if we return to FCPS. No one gave us any problems about doing it. It was easy - I seem to remember we just filled out an online form?

I have mostly good things to say about VAVA--their math instruction is truly excellent--but my kids were really burned out with online school by the end. And even in middle school you need a lot of parental involvement since classes are so big and synchronous learning is once a week.

If you’re for full-time enrollment. Those testing requirements are met through private testing. You can order a test online and proctor it.
