You should find a new healthcare provider in MD or DC, unfortunately. If Virginia bans abortion after 15 weeks, a Virginia provider probably won’t even be allowed to counsel you to go to a different state to terminate.

Come on over to MD. You can visit me anytime to see the beautiful sights.

OP, I've had a D&E at 21 weeks but my much wanted baby had already died. I live in VA and my doctor was out of town the week I needed a D&E so they sent me to DC to have the operation. Me driving 30 minutes for the procedure wasn't a big deal.

Having my baby die was earth shattering.

IVF clinics are on the chopping block in the South. This is going to make a lot of doctors very rich in places like Maryland and Illinois that abut these regressive states. It's also going to cause massive backlogs and increase IVF costs for local women who need IVF.

It's going to be a total sh#tshow.

Women presenting to the doctor with a miscarriage will be suspect.

I wonder how insurance will deal with this since it’s now banned in several states. For example, can insurance companies cover the cost of abortion if it’s employer based in a state with an existing ban even if you travel to a state where it’s legal?

I am just in shock. I knew this was coming, I've put money and time and work into reproductive justice, I vote, etc. But still. I worry for all the people this will hurt. I also worry for myself as I was starting to adjust to the possibility of going the IVF route and now I don't know if I'll even be able to do that.

If you have an issue with your state’s laws you out your money and vote behind your position. Vote people in and contribute to politicians that align with your beliefs

It's such a hard and scary thing to know you might have struggle to get appropriate medical care for your desperately wanted pregnancy because people are so scared of people getting abortions for the "wrong reasons." I hate it and I'm so sorry, OP.

You go to Maryland. And count yourself lucky you only have to travel that far.

Yes, it's going to be a lot harder for people in this situation. There are abortion funds and things like that, but you wouldn't know in advance if you'd qualify and you'll have to make a decision fast in the event you're late in pregnancy. I am sorry you have to think about this.

I already know my insurance, military, will not cover abortions for medical reasons. So that's 20K.

That said, not having the option to terminate? Awful. I'm already down about TTC. I've had multiple pregnancy losses so I might be at risk for this situation. This just sucks.

Is a D&C or D&E really $20k? That doesn't sound right.

I agree that this sucks, though.

At 20+ weeks? Probably 20K at a minimum.
