Subject: question on potty training puppy-
You don't go from the contained area to full roam of the house in one step. It needs to be incremental.
Some training methods suggest something like a new room for every month without an accident but that's kind of drawn out in my opinion. It gives you the idea though.

Ok thanks- she's 17 weeks but will def keep

12 weeks is still quite young. She’ll likely mess up a few more times. You gave her too much freedom.

Her area does not have a rug- so yes it was on our bedroom carpeting... agree it can be confusing... we will take it more slowly.

Subject: question on potty training puppy-
Our pup is 4 months old and has been doing great. No accidents since first week or two home. Only then did she pee a few times and poop once. We had her in a contained area 90% of the time. She is also sort of bell trained. We started letting her free in the house 2-3 days ago. She has been doing great, sleeping by our feet and following us around. It felt like a "real" dog! Today after lunch she peed but had never pooped. We took her out and she peed. Then after coming in, she followed my husband upstairs and when he walked into the closet she pooped on our carpet when he wasn't around her.
Obv not a big deal and not her fault, but now I don't know how to handle her roaming the house. Should we go back to her area and only let her roam after she def has gone to the bathroom? Her area is an entire room with her crate and her bed and toys. We were so happy to let her free : )
She still sleeps in her crate at night and some naps.
