For sure make an appointment - when we took DS, you text when you get to front door, and they called his number literally as we walked it. Lots of paperwork so you sit a bit while the kid goes through it all, but otherwise really smooth.

Oops, that link might not work. But go to MVA, schedule an appointment, then first time driver/id services. There's a ton of paperwork for them to go through (and for you to bring), so it makes sense that you'd need an appointment for that.
