Same here...and I was embarrassed to ask a question about period blood in front of other girls, there would be no way I'd have the courage to ask (or even write it down) a TMI question in front of boys.

I remember our teacher talking to us about periods and showing us pads. We were separated by gender.

I don’t have strong feelings either way except I don’t think it will be good for kids if their parents didn’t discuss things ahead of time. My daughter already got her first period when they had the menstruation discussion in school. She told me how it was the first time many of her friends heard about it and this was confirmed by parents. Some of their parents spoke to me later and said how our kids talked after and my daughter told their kids, her friends, her experience in a helpful way. I’m not sure all of them would be as open if it was mixed gender. But I think parents should be discussing at home and not rely on schools for everything.

Genders are combined for every other subject, why should FLE be any different? Do you think they separate genders in medical school so men don’t have to learn about ovaries? lol

As far as FLE, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be combined.

Men are often soooo ignorant about female anatomy, and then generally think it’s just gross unless It’s sexualized. This is good.

The only reason I can think to separate the genders for Sex Ed is because you think the kids might be less embarrassed to ask questions in a single-sex environment; since in my misty memories they’re generally too embarrassed too many questions anyway.

The new superintendent is from Portland. She's all in on all of this.

The good thing about FCPS is that it's not that progressive. But it's still in the DMV, some of this is inescapable

Now the board voted to research if they should have 4-6th graders all together for FLE instead of separated by gender. They are also deciding if they should teach elementary school children about gender identity. It’s as if they are just looking to stir the pot. Write to your board member….or the new superintendent. Maybe she will actually listen.
