Bless your heart. Hyundai doesn’t make tires. And clearly you’ve never driven one. It’s not the 1980s. Hyundai is a mainstream badge with average to above average reliability to the point where it’s outselling Honda in America. Hyundai is making the highly-regarded and sought after Genesis models. There’s nothing wrong with driving one. They are well designed and loaded with features. In fact the Ioniq5 and KonaN are terrific. Check yourself.

Can’t comment on Nexen tires other than they are not widely used as OE by the car industry. I would take the opportunity to replace the tires with something highly rated ftom Continental/Bridgestone/Pirelli/Goodyear/Yokohama if economically feasible. A high quality tire is perhaps the most important safety feature on any car.

By the way, was either wheel bent or damaged?

A half mile at 40 mph can certainly shred a tire. I find it a bit confounding that you didn’t realize there was an issue within 50-100 yards. Not likely to cut down two tires on glass but a reputable shop should be able to look at the non shredded tire and make an informed judgement about the cause, such as a cut or damaged sidewall and the possible cause. I’m disinclined to think it was a nail/screw in each tire unless your tires were losing pressure over a much longer time or distance. It would seem the rear tire lost pressure long before the front.

Be aware that an AWD car may have wear tolerances that could necessitate replacing all four tires.

This is OP. The tires were both on the passenger side. I guessed that I must have run over something, but I felt nothing, and saw nothing on the road. It seems strange that running over something would blow out two tires at the same time, and yet I felt nothing at all.

BTW, I've gotten a nail in my tire in the past in my old Honda, and it was a very slow leak in the tire.

I didn't hit anything that I know of. I can't see broken glass shredding a tire like this. I did drive on it for about half a mile after I heard the noise and before I stopped, so that may have shredded the tire. The front tire was completely flat (obviously ruined), but not shredded and broken apart like the rear tire was.

You may have struck something at an earlier point which caused a bubble or broken sidewall on the tires which then failed after a second impact. A catastrophic failure which shreds a tire is highly unusual as is the simultaneous failure of two front tires unless they were grossly under or overinflated. You might expect two left side or right side tires striking pothole or object. You can report the incident to NHTSA and contact the tire company.

There was an issue with failures of Firestone tires on Ford Explorers with catastrophic results many years ago so it’s not inconceivable that something could be of concern.

Pirelli and some other manufacturers offer a limited road hazard warranty on tires through the vehicle manufacturer. Check the documentation that came with your vehicle or the tire company website.

Since they blew out at exactly the same time, I would assume you ran over something. It might have been a few hundred yards before they actually blew so you didn’t see anything in the road right there. Nails or screws that fell from a construction truck is most likely.

I was driving at about 40 mph on clean, clear road. Didn't hit anything. No pothole, nothing visible on the road.
Suddenly, I heard a loud noise (at first I'd thought it was interference on the radio), then it got louder, and the car got bumpier, so I pulled off to the side to inspect. One tire shredded, the other completely flat.
Has this every happened to you? My car is a year old with 12K miles on it!!
I'm wondering if the tires just suck these days? Were defective? What would make them blow out at the same time?
