Call 911 or 311 ( NOT HARD TO REMEMBER). Of more benign, call a wellness check. Put it in your phone. You do not need to provide your name . This is not difficult people.

Do you ever take metro or ride the bus? I’m a native Washingtonian and this happens so often. Simply put, there are so many mentally ill passengers.

I ride the 30 bus all the time. And I call in mentally people exhibit threatening behavior. I also call in folks who are passed out or appear dead. I am not taking a pulse. I call in the wellness check. You should too in both scenarios. You don't have to give your name - just the location for the behavior or distress you've noticed. They take care of the rest.

The doors were closed, the driver was unable to open them, and we were trapped. The violent man would have easily turned on any of us if we tried to intervene.

The DA never brought charges.

They have video footage and they may know who the suspect is already. Often times, repeat criminals are well known to local police.

I have kids at NCS and Sidwell and they (and many classmates) also ride this bus.

It's not just a public school issue and can't be solved by providing DCPS kids with transportation.

Here's the number. Put it in your phone. If you see someone lying unconscious on the sidewalk or bus shelter or bushes, call it. If someone is ranting and raving Call it. And call 311 if the situation is really dire, like someone saying death threats so the non emergency response can decide how to deal with it best. They can deploy a wellness check (like below) and/or officers if they see fit. I actually called in 311 once when there was someone shouting wildly on the corner by....Wilson. He was shouting wild and threatening things and reaching out to touch students and grab their backpacks and stop them as they walked by. Yeah, nope. See something, say something. STOP LOOKING THE OTHER WAY.

Dedicated school buses will never happen. City kids ride more than adequate public transport free. Does the city need more police and transit police? Yes. Does the city need involuntary mental health holds and more citizens who will pick up the phone and call in someone ranting and racing? Yes.
