This. Just like the people with the perfect social media lives, it’s all overcompensation and denial of reality.

So if I guy thinks his wife is beautiful, he should not say something or just keep it to himself?

I could fantasize about any woman in the world, the only one I fantasize about is my wife. She is gorgeous.

My husband is pretty effusive in general - a charming extrovert. He does compliment me in front of others pretty consistently, but like most things in life it kind of waxes and wanes. Like right now he's very stressed from life in general so he's not as outwardly focused.

I guess the question is, are you constantly complimenting your partner? Or are you expecting them to do something that you're not doing for them?

I know my husband would like me to compliment him more. I'm not effusive or extroverted, so it's not something that comes naturally, but I do try.

Yep

This. Talk is cheap. My ex was like this and guess what? He was verbally and physically abusive behind closed doors. He promised me so much -- car, house, paying off my loans -- and did none of those things. I got nothing in the divorce either.

I also am always envious of this. My husband is pretty stingy with compliments in general, but when he gives them, it's almost always in private. Though actually he has been working harder at this in recent years because it came up in couple's therapy. He used to sometimes "tease" me in public (he'd say tease, I'd say "make fun of") or kind of do that thing men sometimes do that's like "oh you know women, they be shopping" which I found incredibly dismissive and not true to his actual thinking. I think he was playing a role of what he thinks a husband is, based on his dad and on crap media.

He does better now and is way more supportive in general and gives more compliments including the occasional one in public. But I would never describe him as "effusive" about anything, especially me.

I'd like to think as PP's do, that men who do this are covering up for something. But I don't really think that's true, it's my envy talking. I think some small percent of men are just like this.

Normal? In front of other people? Not really.
If my husband did that I would be embarrassed because I am shy. If she likes it, good for them.

Wow, that is really sweet! I don't know if it's normal, but my husband is not like that at all.

Aww, sweet.

No, I'd say that's uncommon. I'll be your hypewoman.

OP, you are amazing. You've really been rockin' it lately and I'm impressed! Whatever you're doing, keep. it. up.
