A friend at work got pregnant by her boss. Her family is deeply religious and all of them are really nice, generous and caring people. She had two children already. She got divorced and her entire family cut her off. She is insanely close to her family during all the time I had known her. It was a shocking experience for me and I cannot imagine what they all went through.

Wife was cheating with a coworker. Ended in divorce for both marriages with the cheaters still denying they were together before the divorces (they married immediately after divorces were finalized). There was an insane amount if gaslighting and manipulation going on so it was really shocking to all of us when the facts came out.

No. My circle is not big but I was not shocked by divorces I know. People seemed shocked by mine but everyone who knows me well was more shocked it lasted as long as it did.

Do you mean Reese Witherspoon? That was ages ago, she got re-married, had a kid, and divorced since her marriage to Ryan.

It's not all that surprising since they were early 20s and only got married because Reese was pregnant.

Yes my BIL and his wife divorced, out of the blue to the rest of the family. They are still friends and she comes to family events. No kids. I guess their issues were just kept private. They seemed great to everyone else.

Half of marriages fail and the post-Covid wave of divorces is just beginning. It shouldn’t be shocking to you.

Not shocked by any of them anymore. The older i get, the more i understand that a lot of people put an incredible effort into a facade.

On the flip side, also know several openly miserable/openly contentious marriages where i can’t believe they havent divorced.

Al and Tipper

Yes, a couple I was very friendly with. They are about 20 years older than me, so they were sort of a guiding example, I always admired their marriage. Then the husband transitioned to female at the age of 59. They are not officially divorced, though, because the husband has very generous retirement health benefits from work. AFAIK, they are staying friendly, but not together. They both moved out of the area, and we pretty much lost touch.

Yes, the DW had an affair with a coworker at work that was completely out of the blue. Second child was around 1 when DH found out. The affair partner and wife decided to try and work it out. DH filed for divorce.
