Ruth Wattenberg is the Brandon Todd of DC Education discussions. She's present, with little grasp for what's being discussed. She latches on to an idea and fights for it, but without any awareness of a bigger picture and seemingly allergic to larger strategic considerations.

He has been doing great, but he actually has very little policy substance beyond the most progressive positions and will likely get token support from other high school students and his parents. That said, if he wanted to go into politics, he woiuld likely have a future.

And the release is that she is voting for Tricia, but she made it clear it is not an endorsement.

Is there a political science major in the house who can explain that distinction?

It is distinction that is meaningless but meant to make her friends that didn't receive her endorsement feel better. We can all parse this language.

This is the most Mary Cheh thing ever. Will anyone miss her?

I will. I fought with Mary from time to time, but she always had integrity. She has character and was fit for office. Never worrying that some slimy scandal would ensnare her is worth a future, as voters will soon learn if they elect Eric Goulet. Goulet comes from the wing of DC politics with little care for the legality of actions/behaviors.

This squares with my experience with Cheh. To add on, I found I disagreed with her a lot in the early years, and less and less over time. I don't know which one of us was learning.

I could have written this. I think she is the one who learned.

Can't stand Goulet--agree with you there. I just find Cheh feckless and mealymouthed. This non-endorsement is a perfect example. I don't agree with her choice of candidate, but if she's going to bother to express a preference, she should say it with her chest.

Until Cheh abruptly decided to not seek re-election, Frumin was her finance chair. That's gotta sting.

Been thinking about who is hurt by this. Probably Goulet (who became the “establishment” candidate with the Post endorsement) and maybe Frumin (whom many people probably assumed she’d support).

But honestly not sure it makes much of a difference, since I don’t think her personal popularity is particularly high. I have yet to meet someone in real life who has much good to say about her as a council person. She’s a great example of the power of incumbency.
