Can I ask what's your niece's starting salary? My niece is also interested in studying CS, and GMU is the most likely one she will be attending. She will be applying for college in a couple years.

Tech person here who does hiring. I prefer to see internships as you learn how to operate in a work environment and we don't have to teach you that on the job. Also, doing some CS-related classes at the local community college isn't ideal -- you're in big-name university for their instruction after all.
But.... the market is hot right now, so any path will not mean a person ends up jobless in this field.

Demand for CS employees may be great enough that a summer internship isn't as important. There are also such things as full time internships after college graduation, e.g. for a year or whatever.
COVID response royally messed up internships over the last couple of years, to put it politely. This may have increased demand for new graduates (smaller pipeline) and is a good reason why a new grad may not have any summer internships on their resume for CS.

Most employers look for some kind of experience. For CS, there are many ways to get it though. The kids I look for when hiring are kids that have a passion for building. If they do, then they're probably doing open source and side projects and have public github repos.

CS...yes. Not sure how she connected with the company She did lots of work looking for an internship both through her school and on her own. It is a smaller co few would be familiar with. She goes to a well rated CS school but not the very top of this list.

Huh. My UVA rising second-year kid is interning and getting some certs. Several friends are taking classes at NVCC. They’re not working at all, just like OP described. Interesting. I think you need to be careful with the summer classes and be sure that UVA will actually accept them for transfer credit in your major.
