It looks like there is nothing this year for kids who are performing at or above grade levels..

Why would a kid who is at or above grade level need summer school, OP? That’s who it is intended for in elementary and middle.

Since pandemic, many things changed, so does the “summer school “ . Some post above mentioned different summer program they got

It is school dependent this year. Our school is not offering it to everyone but offered another week program.

We do private summer classes.

Our middle school opened up the summer school program to all students.

It could certainly be different this year, but the summer school program last year at our middle school (for rising 6th) was general — a language arts class, a hybrid humanities/tech class, and math. There was no leveling.

At my daughter's middle school, the summer classes are for students who are struggling academically and by invitation only.

Call youe middle school and find out.

As far as I know, there are no county-wide virtual options for middle school students.

You may need to ask at your school to find out. Last year’s programs were more extensive. I have kids at two middle schools and there is very basic info posted on their websites. One says “math, ELA, and electives” will be offered and the other doesn’t even give that much detail, but just provides dates and registration info.

Registration is through ParentVue, so there is also this general information there:

“ MCPS is planning a range of summer programs for elementary, middle, and high school students in summer 2022. Generally, in-person programs will take place in the morning through lunchtime. Afternoon programs sponsored by the county and municipal agencies and outside providers will be available in selected schools.

The goal of the summer programs is to mitigate learning disruption and continue to engage students in academic, specials and electives, and social-emotional support, while also narrowing the focus to students with the greatest need to accelerate their learning.

The curriculum is designed to support students who need additional or repeated instruction in the major work of the previous grade level and/or are currently below grade level in reading and/or math, with an emphasis on foundational skills.

Key features of the tentative program design include:

In-person local school programs offered by elementary, middle, and high schools. To maximize resources and available staffing, students with the greatest need may be prioritized first for programs at their local schools. Summer Curriculum is designed to REPEAT the major work of the previous grade for students who were unsuccessful in learning this material.
A focused program for newcomer English Learners/Emergent Multilingual Learners.
Online tutoring with external providers available to all students, on flexible schedules, and available 24/7.
No cost for students, with transportation and meals provided.”

They are offering summer school at my child's middle school with a county camp offered afterwards. The summer school is offered to everyone, no referrals. So far, they have shared that summer school is half day. The camp is optional. More details are to come.

I'm not seeing programs for middle schoolers other than remedial ones:
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/coronavirus/summer-programs.aspx

Interested in a program in your local elementary or middle school?
These programs will be tailored for students with the greatest need of mitigating learning disruption. The curriculum is designed to support students who need additional or repeated instruction in the major work of the previous grade level and/or are currently below-grade level in reading or math, with an emphasis on foundational skills. Some students may receive specific outreach from their local school based on need.

If your kid has been referred for summer school, definitely take advantage to help her review what she learned in 6th grade and catch up with her peers.

Thank you for the suggestions. To be honest, I am not quite sure about summer school, just want to make good use of the resource offered by school - " free summer camp"? Can I chose what to take for MIDDLE SCHOOL summer school?

Anonymous wrote:What's your goal? For her to take Spanish 2 or 8th grade math in 7th grade? If so, I'd caution against it for a B student. Spanish 2 moves a lot faster than Spanish 1A and 1B, and math isn't a subject I'd try to condense a year's worth of materials into summer school -- it's not going to set a strong enough base for the next year. I'd use the summer to review and reinforce the concepts she learned in 6th grade so that she can be ready to succeed on her current path next year.

DD is in 6th grade, we've never enrolled in any "free" summer program offered by MCPS. DD is an OK student, B and above, She is take Spanish 1AB now, can she take 2A/B in summer school? She is doing 6 grade math now, is she going to take 7th grade math during the summer school?
