(OP) At my kid's school they don't distinguish between a girl and boys uniform and being non binary sometimes my kid wears the uniform pants and very occasionally the skirt. There is no tie etc just a polo shirt so uniform isn't a problem. I don't think they wish to come out as non binary to the school as such but would just like to be called their preferred name. I will speak to her counselor about it and see what they say. I am discouraged by the responses though.

Most Catholic schools don't offer this as an option OP.

Talk to the school. But unlike the family in the article, start with the administration. You can't just skip that step. I will say at the high school level this is a non issue at our hs. The only issue is uniform compliance. You wear a boy or girl uniform. You can't mix them like boy uniform with painted nails or girl skirt with boy's tie.

Actually, no. https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/singular-nonbinary-they

The PP was clarifying that the meant it as plural in the previous post. Calm down.

I know of no trans kids at my friend's Catholic school. We discussed because there are trans students at my child's school, and it's a non-issue.
Apparently some Catholic schools don't produce trans people, at least they aren't trans while in school there... I would seriously consider another independent option.

I don't think it would fly at our school, but ours is pretty conservative. I think it very much matters where you are. Honestly I would suggest your child hold off on a name change until high school, where it will be easier to make a fresh start.

That's only if you don't know to whom you are referring. They when referring to a particular person is incorrect.

That is not very encouraging, I'm glad Micheal has found a school that is completely accepting.

+1

Stay current on all the bespoke pronouns. There will be a quiz.

Hopefully your 7ty grade child will be treated better by the school than your comment is on this board.

If you tell them to use whatever pronouns, they will. NBD.
Someone may forget or be new, etc. but not on purpose.

My 7th grade DD goes to a fairly progressive Catholic school. They are the only student in their year group that they know who identifies as non binary, although they are friends with a few gay students. They would like to ask the school to use their gender neutral name when they start back for 8th grade after the summer. I am wondering how this is going to be received... I know Catholic school is not ideal for LGBTQ kids so we are going to make a change for High School but they are adamant they want to stay for 8th as they have so many good friends at the school.
