All current reading programs including those taught in school are phonetically based. The kids are asked when writing to use their best phonetics to spell. Spelling and reading are very different skill sets.

OP, we used the Letter Factory DVDs and Bob Books. I I kept it light and fun. My DS was reading by 4.

+1. I taught both my kids to read using the Hooked on Phonics app. One had just turned 4 when we started and the other was about 4.5 or so. We called it their "reading games" and they loved it.

My oldest wanted to learn at 5 in pre-K, and knew all his letter sounds, but got super frustrated when we tried the Bob books. We waited a few months and tried again until he could work through them without getting down on himself. On the other hand, my now 4yo picked up the Bob books one day and read through half of them in one sitting, by herself. She was totally ready. When they’re ready, it won’t feel forced. So I suggest starting with Bob, or something like them, and just let him take the lead. Good luck!

I would tell your kid "I know you want to learn to read. How exciting! The best way to do that is to listen the books I read to you and you help me find the words on the signs and cereal boxes. Your brain will read when it's ready, and while you're close, we don't have to rush it."

While he does sound close to being ready, giving him the idea that you'll give him lessons and if it doesn't work right away because he's only 3.5...could set him up to feel like a failure.

Did you use the app? How engaging/addictive is it? I am very restrictive about screen time but obviously this seems like a time when screen time would be okay. What are your impressions?

Hooked on Phonics + sight words

Keep reading a ton together and let him do some of the “reading.” He likely has many of your books memorized and you can use his knowledge to say some of the words that you point out. This is a way to reinforce sight words or phonics but in a fun way that is you guys continuing to do something you love.

Bob books

DS is 3.5 and wants to learn to read. He knows his letters and phonetic sounds as well as blends. He rhymes well and plays a game where he takes the first letter out of a spoken word and replaces it with another. I think he’s ready.

I don’t want to f up and make him hate reading if I do this wrong. But he keeps asking me to teach him.
