I fly a popular business route regularly and it is because most people have been sitting all day in meetings and it’s nice to stand a bit.

The overhead space is for luggage. I can give you a dozen reasons not to check a bag that can be carried on, including: checking a bag is $$, airlines lose checked bags at an alarming rate, it often takes an absurdly long time for checked luggage to come out on the baggage carousel, checking a bag is harder on the luggage and reduces it's usable life...
And one more critical one, no waiting in line to check a bag. From the Uber straight to security.

Ok the ones with no carry ons I can’t explain but the airlines allow carry-ins-why shouldn’t people bring them if they comply with size rules?

Because some people feel more comfortable being in position to board. Traveling can bring on a ton of anxiety in people and it's a harmless way to manage it (if other people aren't jerks about it.)

It’s so weird. People get in lines 30 minutes before they even intend to board and are territorial about it. Some of them are obviously looking to grab overhead space for the luggage they should have checked but not everyone. It’s the damnest thing. It isn’t like you don’t have an assigned seat or like you won’t actually get on the plane.
