DC will have a phone and we may even have an old point and shoot digital camera lying around. Looks like that is all DC needs since the course is online.

I think I am the teacher for at least one of the kids mentioned here.
Photo varies from school to school.
Some schools don’t have dark rooms at all.
Some use film/darkroom only at the upper levels.
Online would be digital and I would imagine allow phones to be used.
At my school Photo 1 is typically film/darkroom exclusively. Then Photo 2/3/4 are typically a 50-50 hybrid of film and digital.
Last year during virtual using film/darkroom was sadly of course not an option, so Photo 1 had to be digital.
Phones were also used since I couldn’t loan out digital cameras. About half of my students had DSLRs though, so I did provide instruction on how to use them.
I spent semester 1 this year getting (most of) the Photo 2 kids up to speed with film/darkroom. I had a few who had taken Photo 1 pre-pandemic, so I got those particular students up to speed with digital.
I imagine next year (and even the year after) I will have students that need basic film/darkroom instruction in Photo 2 since there may be students who took Photo 1 during virtual but didn’t go straight to Photo 2 this year.
This year Photo 2/3/4 has done more digital work second semester than usual due to so many more absences than usual.
It’s harder to catch up with a film/darkroom project than it is digital and I honestly don’t want to overwhelm my students.

Yes. My DD did 1 a/b virtually last year during Covid. She didn't need any equipment except her IPhone.

She signed up for Photography 2 this year but because of her schedule, she was placed in the 1a/b class during the fall semester. Teacher said it wasn't a big deal because at least this way, she would be able to get darkroom experience. Something she missed last year obviously. She needed a film camera.

In second semester, she moved to the class with all Photography 2 students. This semester, she needed a digital camera to shoot pictures.

I'm the Photo 3 mom above. At our school, kids in Photo 2, 3, and 4 are frequently grouped together, working on similar projects/topics, but different levels of photo or arts skill. DC was very happy that they didn't have any Photo 2 students in first semester because the Photo 2 students were getting film camera instruction since they didn't have it last year and it is still important.

I would ask the regular school year photo teacher. If you don't know who that is, email the Arts department head. They will be able to assist you. The Photo teacher should still know what the curriculum is for summer school, as it is set by the County.

DS is taking photography to fulfill his art credit. I was surprised that I’ve never seen him use anything but his phone. Maybe it varies by school or during the class they are given film cameras for use that just don’t come home? He enjoys the class. It’s very creative and laid back. However, his non-MCPS middle school offered a photography class that taught them much more advanced skills using film photography and that was our expectation.

Just clarifying my comments. Photo 1 is intended to be 100% film. Photo 2-4 is generally a hybrid of film & digital. Dc has done one film assignment this year. Rest of assignments have been digital.

Lots of editing, even with film, can be done during processing. Like I said, pretty cool stuff. DC opened up and actually started engaging in conversations about school thanks to this class.

What kind of camera equipment does photography 1A/1B require? DC is planning to take this course this summer through the central high school summer program. Since DC will be outside US visiting family we would like to take what is needed from here.
