Hi keep on it. You will not be just assigned, you will still need to apply for a job through the MCPS careers website. If nothing is popping up call up the Career department.


I had a open contract, but never got a job posting due to a glitch. I did get a job the next year.

I was in that position a few years ago and yes, June 10 is the date by which they will assign you a school if no other school where you have interviewed has already offered you a spot. The truth is that you may not know where you will work until June 10, but the contract means that you definitely will get a job. The county is big so your commute may be long depending on where you land. If you have to pick somewhere to live before June 10, pick somewhere where you’d like to live and is near major roads.

I feel like that is easier said then done. Especially for someone new to the county. Can you keep everything in storage and airbnb it for a bit if you need to get down here earlier? I wouldn't worry about enrolling your child. That is the easy part. I would wait because commute is a big deal. I was a mid year hire and it took forever for placement. In the meantime, look at apartments and areas that are affordable for you so that when the time comes, you can make a quick decision.

Just find an apartment you like, in an area you like, with schools you like for your child, and just commute like many other teachers. Keep interviewing in the meantime for the level you'd prefer to work with (ES, MS, or HS), and hope for the best. Otherwise you'll be placed somewhere. You'll have a job, don't worry.

I've heard the CO is really understaffed these days so things get backed up.

Hi! They just give me vague answers about when I will get placed. They have told me “just keep interviewing” and haven’t given me a timeline for when I will get placed.

Why isn’t Central Office providing you the answers that you need? It seems that they have a lot of vacancies to fill. They should be letting new people know the process.

Hello! I signed an Open Contract with MCPS in December. I am a fairly new ESOL teacher. I am licensed in FL. I have never taught in a US public school. I am returning to the DMV area this summer. I am freaking out because I haven't been able to secure a job with a school yet. I read an old post that said that open contract teachers are placed in June. Does anyone here have any insight? I am freaking out because I can't sign a lease on an apartment until I have been placed and I can't get my son enrolled and settled until we know where I am working. Any insights into the hiring/placement process would really help my anxiety. Thanks!
