I don't think it is quite the same as having someone scurrying up and down back stairs because they weren't good enough to be with the rest of the people in the house.

Op, are you going to enclose your back door because it was the only one servants could use back in the day?

If you ever have a fire in the kitchen, they could be a life saver. It is always a good idea to have 2 ways to exit a kitchen. In a lot of modern kitchens, if there's a fire between you and the door, you're trapped.

If you use them like regular stairs then they are no longer meant for SERVANTS.

This is OP, sorry I see I had a typo in my post. I meant do I want to keep stairs that were expressly built for servants, that seems wrong!

I could just call them stairs, but I would always know they were really meant for maids who were to not be to seen on the regular stairs. That's just kind of gross to me.

Get a servant and put the stairs to use?

I suppose tyou could close it off and reclaim that space upstairs and down (in terms of a larger kitchen (or dining room?), more floor space upstairs, etc), but honestly, a second set of stairs in the back of the house can be very convenient. Maybe not if your kids are very small, but I think I'd live in the house and see the flow of daily living before making any drastic changes.

I think it's not uncommon for them to be boarded up and getting floor space on the second floor and just enclosing them on the main level until you decide what to do with that space.
