If your kids are young just try a variety of things. Rec level is rarely, if ever, year round so they could play soccer in the fall and softball in the spring. Try a camp that has a variety of activities: arts, sports, swimming, etc. they may come home and say they want to try XYZ activity.

They do not need to be professionally evaluated!

There are programs at parks and rec orgs that are 4-8 weeks that are good for this.

You are overthinking this. A camp is a good way to find out if a kid has interest in something.

a semester is too long, a camp is for fun, so I wonder if there is a professional place to evaluate kid's sports readiness / interest before jumping in.
